食品サンプルのルーツはエジプト時代死者への副葬品としての偽の食品が起源らしいのですが、日本で大正から昭和初期にかけて考案された食品サンプルも、戦前はパラフィンで作られ、戦時中は物資も不足し、サンプルを並べることも禁止された中パラフィンの節約と葬儀のお供えとして生き残り、戦後は素材がプラスチックに替わって現在に至っているようです。

Foreign travelers had difficulties reading Japanese menus, so Japanese artisans and candle makers quickly developed plates of wax foods for restaurants that made it easy for foreigners to order something that looked good. 私が小学校に入学した頃、バービードールに魅せられて、ねだって買って貰ったのですが、小物の中にフェイク・デコレーションケーキがあり、その甘い匂いが忘れられません。考えてみれば、あれはPVCの匂いだったのですね。でも他のオモチャとは少し違うパラフィンのような匂いがしました。特別のフレーバーが合成してあったのか、それともパラフィンも混ぜてあったのかもしれません。たしかオモチャのままごとセットにもそっくりなステーキがあったのを覚えています。
その何年か前1958年に米国でのビールの販促に日本からステーキのサンプルが輸入されたそうです。それがマテル社のオモチャになって登場したのでしょうね・・・。
